Lee Perry had reached the pinnacle of the Jamaican music industry at the dawn of the 1970s. His international hit, « Return Of Django », had not only confirmed his position as one of the leading creators of reggae music, it had also provided him with the funds necessary to greatly increase his studio time, thus allowing him to afford new sonic experiments.
This is clearly evident in his output throughout 1970, a period during which the proto-dub recordings of his regular studio group, The Hippy Boys, made up the bulk of his releases. The extent to which the quartet dominated Perry's output during the first half of the year is demonstrated in this third volume of his Jamaican singles, with 75% of the collection made up of instrumental works.
With 14 tracks previously unreleased on CD and many others unavailable on any format since the 1990s, « Land of Kinks » not only offers a fascinating glimpse into Lee Perry's evolution as a producer, but also offers the opportunity to discover some of the most ambitious and remarkable reggae recordings of the early 70s.
