Il y a près de 20 ans, Led Zeppelin released BBC Sessions, a double album of live recordings captured during the band's appearances on the BBC between 1969 and 1971. In 2016, Led Zeppelin will release The Complete BBC Sessions, a new update of this anthology remastered by Jimmy Page and enriched with eight previously unreleased BBC recordings, including three from a "lost" session dating from 1969.
BBC Sessions was released in 1997 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. The Complete BBC Sessions extends this anthology with a third disc containing eight previously unreleased performances, plus " White Summer", available in 1990 in the Led Zeppelin Boxed Set. This selection also offers in-depth liner notes on each session written by Dave Lewis. For the first time, this text provides precise details on each of the band's appearances on the BBC.
The highlights of this new version include the very first release of a mythical radio session that everyone thought had been lost for decades. Broadcast in April 1969, this session features three tracks: "I Can't Quit You Baby", " You Shook Me" and the only recorded performance of "Sunshine Woman". Two previously unreleased versions of " Communication Breakdown" and "What Is And What Should Never Be" are also included. Recorded two years apart, these performances show how quickly the band evolved during this short period.
Jimmy Page had mentioned this progression in an interview with Guitar World: "the BBC Sessions show how organic the band was. Led Zeppelin could constantly change the way they played. We were becoming more and more tightly knit, it was almost telepathy."
John Paul Jones adds to Wall of Sound: "we had already toured a lot by the time these sessions were recorded. The albums always defined the starting point of the music, then we would develop it on tour. Then we would go straight from concert halls to the BBC studios."
In an interview with Mojo, Robert Plant recalls: "everything was very subdued: the audience was well-behaved, the technicians were mumbling and the introductions were very discreet, as if a sacred ceremony were about to begin."
