Description

FRED PALLEM & LE SACRE DU TYMPAN, "ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL ORCHESTRAS OF RECENT YEARS." --- TÉLÉRAMA ---. "A maverick of the French music scene, whose iconoclastic creativity seems boundless, Fred Pallem joyfully traverses and transfigures La Fontaine's fables." --- TÉLÉRAMA ---. If there's one composer who can't be accused of telling tall tales, it's Fred Pallem. In over twenty years of work, he never repeats himself, from his first album of compositions with Le Sacre du Tympan in 2002 to his last Odyssey in 2018. His career is full of tributes to the composers he reveres (François de Roubaix), to the cinema he is passionate about (Soul Cinéma, Soundtrax), and even to the cartoons of his childhood (Cartoons). But what is less known is that Fred Pallem is also a lover of words. One might have guessed it from his many collaborations with singers (Lavilliers, Barbara Carlotti, MC Solaar, Clarika...), but today words take center stage: "First of all, I wanted to compose music around a spoken voice; to immerse myself in the rhythm of the words and their sounds, to feel the tempo of the diction, then to write music from that. So we recorded the voices first and the music afterward." Voices certainly, but not just any voices. Those of loyal collaborators: Thomas de Pourquery, Sandra Nkaké, Dom Farkas, Elise Caron, Arnaud Aymard aka L'Oiseau Bleu, Marcel Kanche...; and newer companions: Nicole Ferroni, Rebecca Manzoni, Thomas Scimeca (formerly of Chiens de Navarre), and Pascal Mendelson. And whose words does he decide to borrow? A trendy young contemporary author? Not at all. Monsieur Jean de la Fontaine. "Why La Fontaine? I was looking for texts that have a very strong intrinsic musicality with rhymes and a specific meter. A bit like rap. I had been exhilarated by my collaboration with MC Solaar for FIP's Unik Sessions. Unfortunately, contacting new authors would have made the project too long to realize. So I searched through the classic works of French poetry, and La Fontaine appeared to me as an obvious choice. I found myself with thousands of masterpieces of writing at my disposal. A first selection was made, then the storytellers made suggestions. To gain fluidity, simplicity, and serenity, I worked with friends and acquaintances whom I have appreciated for a long time." FEATURING THE FABLES: The Heron - The Animals Sick with the Plague - Let's Love, Let's Fuck - The Wolf and the Dog - The Child and the Schoolmaster - Death and the Unfortunate Man - The Amorous Lion - The Wolf and the Lamb - The Miser Who Had Lost His Treasure - The Forest and the Woodcutter - The Frog Who Wanted to Make Herself as Big as the Ox - The Two Mules - The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse - The Man and the Snake.
