Laura Mvula was born in '86 in the suburbs of Birmingham. Her mother is from St. Kitts, and her father is Jamaican. It was the latter who introduced her to jazz and soul from a young age. She started playing piano at 8 and violin at 10. After graduating from the Birmingham Conservatoire in composition, she wrote her first lyrics and recorded a demo that caught the attention of British manager and producer Kwame Kwaten (a member of the group D-Influence, who have produced for Jay-Z and Mick Jagger, and who opened for Michael Jackson). He encouraged her to release her first two albums "Sing to the Moon" (2013) and "The Dreaming Room" (2016). Both projects received multiple nominations, including the Mercury Prize, the BRITS, the Ivor Novello Awards, the MOBO Awards, and entered the top charts in a dozen countries (including France). After more than 3 years away, Laura Mvula makes her grand return on July 2 with a new album "Pink Noise."
