BETWEEN THE EARTH AND SKY

Description

Born in the 2000s as an experimental-psychedelic-folk-punk duo formed by brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, the lineup then underwent many changes before becoming the quartet of today: the Lynch brothers accompanied by Cormac MacDiarmada and Radie Peat. With a name borrowed from the murderous character in a classic ballad, Lankum, formerly Lynched, is a traditional folk band from Dublin whose music blends the vocal harmonies of its four members with arrangements of Irish uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, violin, and guitar. Their vast repertoire includes humorous traditional ditties, classic Irish Traveller ballads, dance tunes from American and Irish traditions, and their own original compositions. For this second album, their first on Rough Trade, Lankum solidifies their reputation as a band skilled in genre-blending and strives to breathe new life into music from another era. While the quartet is certainly inspired by traditional songs marked by the legendary Frank Harte, Planxty, The Dubliners, and The Watersons, one can detect subtle traces of the band's diverse collective influences, from American folk music to punk, krautrock, ambient techno, psychedelic folk, black metal, and rock'n'roll. Hailed by some as the renewal of traditional folk at its purest, The Guardian has already crowned them with a promising 5/5!
