Lasts Vinyle Jaune

Description

Land of Talk is still here. That was never a given. Over the twenty years of their multifaceted project, Lizzie Powell has oscillated between listening and making music, constantly questioning their role as an artist. Since the release of Performances in 2023, Lizzie Powell found themself exhausted by the ups and downs of the music industry and consumed by worry for their aging parents. And yet, the music never stopped: Lizzie Powell heard songs in traffic, in birdsong, in the daily prayers of their downstairs neighbor, and in the chirping of children in the street. Little by little, melodies took shape, and Lizzie returned with the sixth Land of Talk album, LASTS. LASTS is a title with a double meaning – both resilience and finality – functioning as both a noun and a verb. Although LASTS is haunted by crises such as climate change, political upheaval, and genocide, the scale of global turmoil led Powell to more intimate and human portrayals of suffering and grief. With each album, Powell has reinvented their approach to songwriting, while celebrating a new freedom after coming out as non-binary and exploring the lingering traumas tied to their existence as a non-cisgender man in the music industry. LASTS picks up where its predecessors left off, with unwavering honesty, deep empathy, and justified anger. For Powell, composing is a slow process of inspiration, a constant and fluid conversation rather than flashes of genius or forced writing sessions. These new songs were deeply personal, even for Land of Talk, and Powell knew they could only come to life with trusted collaborators, including drummer Michael Belyea and guitarist/bassist/sound engineer Michael Feuerstack – a longtime friend, advisor, and source of inspiration for Powell. The trio gathered in a chalet in Harrington, a rural area of Quebec.
