Lick the Spoon, Let it Soften is the second album by Lamplight, the project of Virginia composer Ian Hatcher-Williams and his trusted collaborators, including members of Lightning Bug and hemlock. The self-titled debut album (2024) was praised by KEXP, Stereogum, WBUR, Brooklyn Vegan, and The FADER, and led to shared stages with Jake Xerxes Fussell, Advance Base, John Andrews, and Mutual Benefit. While the first album took shape over several years, this one came together quickly. Most of the songs emerged during a songwriting exercise of one song per day in August, partly inspired by The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. The album was then produced and recorded entirely in-house during a lakeside retreat in Vermont, with a supplementary session in the city this winter. The result is both communal and intimate: an album about grief and a transformed understanding of love in all its forms, with tighter arrangements and sharper writing than its predecessor.
