There are soft and fluffy music styles that can verge on mannerism. There are compositions that can quickly become suffocating by waving fragility as a banner. Those of L'Altra easily surpass these pitfalls. Folk, post-rock, chamber music, jazz... so many qualifiers to describe the music of the Americans. So many qualifiers for so many shortcuts. Released in the spring of 2002 on the late Chicago label Aesthetics Records, 'In the Afternoon', the second full-length album by the musicians of L'Altra, breathes nostalgia, sensuality, travel, and wide open spaces. The pastoral beauty of this record speaks to our senses. Here, peaceful melodies, instrumental textures, and atmospheres filled with an insidious and luminous melancholy unfold. Are we celebrating a bygone carefreeness? Nearly two decades later, the intertwined voices of Lindsay Anderson and Joseph Costa resonate as they did on the first day. And this is one of the tour de forces of this album: to be timeless.
