Soleils de Septembre

Description

Astor Piazzolla was just over thirty years old when he went to France to study composition with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau. Her teaching profoundly marked his music. While Piazzolla sought to perfect his classical writing, Boulanger encouraged him to reclaim his roots in tango, urging him not to renounce his identity, but to elevate it. This project celebrates their meeting by weaving together their respective musical worlds: Piazzolla's Argentine heritage, from Carlos Gardel to Alberto Ginastera, and Boulanger's French influences, notably Gabriel Fauré and Lili Boulanger, as well as her taste for early music, evoked here through a consort of viols. The dialogue between classical works and pieces from Piazzolla's Parisian period brings this extraordinary exchange back to life: unexpected, magical, and unique.
