L.A. Witch has always exuded an aura of effortless cool, whether on the noir Americana and laconic rock’n’roll of their self-titled debut or the austere, thunderous adventurism of their second album, Play With Fire. The band - made up of Sade Sanchez (guitar/vocals), Irita Pai (bass) and Ellie English (drums) - began informally, but the sultry and mesmerizing reverb-soaked songs they created won over audiences, taking the project from the insular circle of friends and peers in Southern California to the world at large. On their new album, DOGGOD, the trio pushes their art beyond its previous creative and geographical limits, choosing to create the material in Paris, recording the tracks at Motorbass Studio on rue des Martyrs. DOGGOD explores broader sonic terrain, uses a wider arsenal of sounds, and probes larger existential and cosmic themes, while retaining the sense of the forbidden and surrender that defines the band. DOGGOD is a way of approaching the universal enigma tied to the spiritual nature of love and devotion. These conflicting explorations of love and submission are expressed in L.A. Witch’s fusion of their signature smoky garage alchemy with a disciplined approach to the icy instrumentation of post-punk.
