Giovanni Bassano (ca. 1558-ca. 1617) is often linked to the large family of musicians and harpsichord makers of the same name, although this is not formally established. An Italian composer of the Venetian school, he was one of the key figures in the development of the instrumental ensemble of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Considered at the time as the best cornettist of the Seicento, his legacy includes not only musical and vocal works but also a treatise on how to ornament and play the music of his time. Furthermore, he proposed written improvisations (then called diminutions) on numerous madrigals, motets, and French songs.
To this day, we do not have a recording played on the cornetto of his Ricercar, proposed in his 1585 work. This project takes on the challenge of putting them on record. In order to vary the instrumentation and demonstrate that these pieces were also conceived for other sounds, some are performed on violin, flute, traverso, as well as on the bassanello, an instrument invented by Bassano himself that combines elements of both the cornetto and the bassoon.
The program also includes nine transcribed French songs presented with a formation consisting of one or two soloists accompanied by a continuo bass made up of an archlute, a harp, and a keyboard. Finally, five Fantaisies complete this program, thus providing an overview of Bassano's chamber music production, typical of the virtuosic output of Northern Italy of that time, while offering a great variety of timbres and instrumentation.
