La Passion according to Carlo Gesualdo. In composing his Responsoria, published in 1611, Carlo Gesualdo makes an incursion into the sacred repertoire that reflects the intense emotion of his last years spent under the black sun of a melancholy heightened by increasingly fragile health. The simultaneity of the release of this music for Holy Week and the complex works of the Sixth Book of Madrigals is precisely highlighted by La Compagnia del Madrigale in this impressive new release from Glossa. After addressing the stylistic subjectivity of the madrigals, the vocal ensemble (with experienced artists named Giuseppe Maletto, Daniele Carnovich, and Rossana Bertini) now focuses on the torments and sufferings, the blood and death that accompany the sacred story. Over 3 CDs, Gesualdo's creative musical response to the Passion of Christ alternates with spiritual madrigals composed by some of his most well-known contemporaries (Luzzaschi, Marenzio, de Macque, and Vinci), whose religious texts accentuate the madrigalesque essence of the Responsoria. The discs also include two rarities from Gesualdo's sacred production, In te Domine speravi and Ne reminiscaris, Domine. Once again, Marco Bizzarini has written a fascinating essay for the booklet that situates Gesualdo's music in a realistic context (and not "hysterical") by establishing a parallel with the absolute control of the singers over the intense emotional charge of this masterpiece by the Prince of Venosa.
