In 2020, Covid paralyzes PARIS and THÉO CECCALDI flies to Ethiopia for a breath of fresh air. The cultural shock of bustling Addis-Ababa is immediate, and the encounter with singer HEWAN GEBREWOLD is decisive. Two totally unfamiliar worlds get to know each other and give birth to the unique sound of KUTU, blending Ethiopian voice, trance, jazz and electro in an explosive combo. The collective, joined by CYRIL ATEF (drums), AKEMI FUJIMORI (keyboards) and VALENTIN CECCALDI (bass), sets off for 10 first concerts in France, without knowing where this adventure will lead them.
From then on, word of mouth works and each concert leaves the audience stunned by their incandescent energy. In 2023, after more than 100 concerts in Europe, a first album praised by the press, a complicity forged by hours spent on the road, KUTU is now a family that has found its own voice between traditional heritage and the global dancefloor. The group continues to compose new pieces collectively, on tour, in hotel rooms in Addis or in the studio in Paris.
Today, KUTU has just signed with the prestigious label Naïve and is preparing to release its 2nd album TEWLED (early 2025), inaugurating a new musical direction.
TEWLED, “generations” in Amharic, fully embodies the music of the new generation in Addis and Paris, while drawing its inspiration from ancestral Ethiopian music. Accompanied by producer LAZY FLOW (Pongo, Meryll, Féfé), KUTU creates a 2nd album that is groovy, radiant and euphoric. It includes 12 new pop-format gems, hybrid and luminous, like “Asheweyna”, a song of celebration and festivity.
Driven by a feverish energy, improvisation and trance remain at the heart of their live performance. Each concert is a unique musical experience, celebrating the collective, sharing and the meeting of cultures.
