Music of Xinjiang : Kazakh and Uyghur Music of Central Asia

Description

Formerly known as East Turkestan, Xinjiang is an ancient province (archaeological digs have uncovered remains over 2500 years old) as well as the largest in China, and boasts one of the richest musical heritages in the world. It was in June 2009 that LAURENT JEANNEAU and SHI TANDING recorded the Cossacks (a nomadic people) and the Uyghurs (a sedentary and agrarian people) there, two populations with much in common linguistically. The codes and the instruments (satar, tanbur, dotar, rawab, rushtar, dongbra) are part of Islamic culture (Arab countries, Turkey, and Persia); the themes of the songs and odes revive epics from another time. Recommended.
