Lors de son 70ème anniversaire, Léonard Bernstein a invité Krystian Zimerman pour venir jouer ensemble la Symphonie no. 2 'The Age of Anxiety'. Léonard Berstein, ravi par cette performance, lui a fait promettre de venir jouer 'Age of Anxiety' pour son centième anniversaire.C'est pour cette raison que, plus de trente ans après, il l'aura joué pour le 100e anniversaire de Bernstein, en juin 2018 à Berlin. L'enregistrement marque également la fin d'une époque, la dernière apparition de Sir Simon Rattle avec le Berliner Philharmoniker en tant que chef attitré de l'orchestre en juin 2018 ainsi que la célébration d'un partenariat artistique glorieux avec Zimerman qui a déjà donné lieu à des enregistrements très acclamés de concertos pour piano de Brahms et Lutoslawski.
