Prokofiev attempts a return to classical forms, in a skillful blend of bold harmonies and almost classical wisdom, with an extraordinary sense of rhythm. The first sonata has something harsh, severe, and solid, with a certain fervor in the strange Allegro brusco in C major, one of the most modern pages of Prokofiev. In contrast, the Sonata Op. 94 is of a more radiant freshness, more exuberant, more fundamentally melodic than the previous one.
