The neo-classical pianist Koki Nakano explores the theme of "oceanic feeling."
With his new album "Oceanic Feeling," the Japanese pianist Koki Nakano celebrates ambiguity. The title borrows the expression coined by the French writer and musician Romain Rolland. He describes the oceanic feeling as "an impression of eternity, a sensation of unity with the world around us." While this concept of unity permeates the entire album, the music also evokes the artist's inability to fully experience this famous oceanic feeling, thus reflecting his melancholy, internal tensions, and quest for harmony within his own limits. The pieces are often simple, and in this simplicity, authentically touching. They are never too abstract, so they can always inspire movements. Yet behind each note lies a complex system of layered recording, developed by the artist himself, which gives a unique depth to the sound and, according to Nakano, "a feeling of diving into the piano." The pianist also enjoys stylistic ambiguity: he develops immersive and detailed soundscapes that bring him closer to ambient music composers; but unlike them, he is not afraid of melodies.
