One of the milestones in Kirill Kondrashin's career was certainly the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. Kondrashin conducted the competition concert with American pianist Van Cliburn, who not only won the competition but also found "his" conductor, with whom he completed a triumphant tour. Kondrashin was the first Russian conductor allowed to perform in the United States during the Cold War, and in exchange for this musical agreement between the nations, the Russian public fell in love with the 23-year-old American Van Cliburn, now nicknamed "Vanyushka" in the Soviet Union. In addition to Van Cliburn, whose Tchaikovsky concert is one of the highlights of this 10-CD box set, Russian companions such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Sviatoslav Richter, and David Oistrakh are also featured here with exceptional recordings. Kondrashin had a special friendship with Shostakovich, and he championed his works throughout his career.
