In 1963, guitarist Kenny Burrell has little left to prove; he has played with the cream of jazz, from Dizzy Gillespie to John Coltrane to Billie Holiday, and releases his own albums on Blue Note. But, at the same time, jazz is becoming more complex and liberated, faster, with more notes and explorations. Kenny Burrell does not follow the movement and decides to record this album back to the roots: the blues. In Midnight Blue, there is first what we do not hear: the piano. His group sticks to a rhythm section, a percussionist, and a discreet Stanley Turrentine on saxophone. No instrumental duels here, but a carpet of music where the leader's feline guitar lounges. As good for attentive listening as it is as background music in a bar at closing time, this straightforward record is quite monstrous in its sensual swing.
