This second album of Beethoven choral works presented by the Corydon Singers and Matthew Best includes two fascinating yet rarely performed early compositions: the Cantatas composed around 1790 to mark the death of Joseph II and the accession of his brother Leopold II. Both are distinguished by their dramatic force and direct approach. The Cantata “Joseph” deserves to rank among Beethoven’s most important early works, so remarkable is the maturity it displays for a nineteen-year-old composer. We have also included Beethoven’s tribute to Goethe, Meersstille und Glückliche Fahrt, and the famous Opferlied, magnificently sung by Jean Rigby in the version for soprano, choir and orchestra.
