Description

Kelis describes her sixth album, Food, as "a sort of tacit celebration of love," which involves two unlikely partners. On one side, there is Kelis Rogers, who became known for singing the chorus of the 1999 hit, "Got Your Money" by Ol' Dirty Bastard and whose first album, Kaleidoscope, helped herald the cutting-edge, exciting, and futuristic R'n'B wave that dominated the charts in the early 2000s. A perfect example is her global hit from 2003: "Milkshake." On the other side, there is Dave Sitek, guitarist of the experimental Brooklyn band, TV On The Radio and official producer for independent and arty groups such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals, or Liars. "We are very different people," Kelis explains, "but we really speak the same language, whether it's about music or food, it's crazy." As the title suggests, food plays a big role in Kelis's sixth album. The amazing duo worked and cooked in Dave's house in Los Angeles. Between bites, they crafted an album that sounds nothing like what Kelis has released before: a quick listen to the Simon And Garfunkel-esque ballad, "Bless The Telephone," confirms this. It offers a roots sound but never consciously retro, balancing live brass and a gospel organ against electronics and which, despite all its classic soul and funk influences, could only have been created today.
