Hamburg '72

Description

Here is an exceptional testimony of the Keith Jarrett trio recorded live at the NDR Funkhaus in Hamburg in July 1972. This trio with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, formed in 1966, is Jarrett's first major group, and his choice of musicians is a stroke of genius. With the bassist trained in Ornette Coleman's group and the drummer from the most legendary of Bill Evans' trios, Jarrett gave himself the means to explore all fields of modern jazz, smoothly transitioning from poetic ballads to rhythmic grooves through intense sequences of free improvisation. The pieces played in Hamburg that night allow us to hear Keith on saxophone and flute as well. The interaction between the three musicians is exceptional from start to finish, reaching its emotional climax during the interpretation of Charlie Haden's theme Song for Che. ECM organized the trio's tour in 1972, including the concert for German radio that forms the substance of this album. Manfred Eicher returned to the original analog sources 42 years after their recording, remixing the music in Oslo in July 2014, in collaboration with Jan Erik Kongshaug.
