Koum Tara is a meeting of four musical universes around a single project, created and directed by pianist-composer Karim Maurice: traditional chaâbi music, classical string quartet, contemporary music, and jazz. The raw material has been drawn from the traditional repertoire of the Algerian chaâbi singer Sid Ahmed Belksier. These themes have been worked on, distorted, re-harmonized, and restructured to create a show that blends and intersects cultures. Each musician, through the writing of the project, brings their identity and specific expertise to a single work. It is a true cultural journey that offers us a unique musical alloy, thanks to the real diversity that composes it. The poetry and traditional chaâbi melodies singing of love thus merge and blend with the tradition of the Western string quartet, jazz improvisation, and electronic music. The distorting prism used is the artistic vector that allows for a true fusion of styles and genres in a single piece. At a time when humanity, respect for cultures, and tolerance appear as necessary values for building a better world, this show offers a musical universe where everyone contributes to its construction with their identity, cultural heritage, and originality, to sing of universal love.
