Kaleidoscope has championed many unjustly neglected composers, and this is all the more fitting for Reynaldo Hahn, whose very accessible music goes straight to the heart. Born in Caracas, Hahn achieved great success as a composer, conductor, singer, writer, and music critic. His Quintet was hailed as the greatest of his works at its premiere in 1922: the powerful intensity of the first two movements is a response to those who criticized Hahn as a composer of light music. His Piano Quartet from 1946 bears no trace of modernism but casts a nostalgic glance at the Belle Époque. For Kaleidoscope, it was a profound joy to record for the first time these new arrangements of songs with the excellent tenor with the velvety voice, Karim Sulayman.
