Don't be fooled by her name: Julien Baker is a young songwriter/singer/guitarist from Tennessee, who after playing in a punk-rock band, decided to bring her own compositions to life, and it has served her well. Spotted by the great Matthew E. White, it is in his famous Spacebomb Studios that the young woman recorded Sprained Ankle, a very beautiful stripped-down and intimate indie folk album in the vein of the fabulous For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver.
Carried by her graceful and fragile voice, the young woman of barely 20 opens up about her disillusionments, addictions, faith, and life, with a sincerity that is completely disarming. Filled with a genuine melancholy, this first opus is a pure and minimalist album, where a single line of acoustic or electric guitar, sometimes coupled with light percussion, marries the extremely moving timbre of the young American.
