Julia Cumming’s solo debut, *Julia*, opens with an unvarnished statement of independence: her voice and a piano unite for a self-liberating proclamation, rejecting doubt, misogyny, and the idea of being “too much.” *Julia* opens a long-matured creative door for the New York-born multi-instrumentalist and bassist of Sunflower Bean, the culmination of nearly two decades of bands, releases, labels, and intensive touring. At the end of the *Headful of Sugar* era in 2023, Cumming settled in Los Angeles, where a deeply restorative two-year collaboration with producer Brian Robert Jones—her “second artistic puberty”—took shape.
