A clerestory – a level or a bright or "open" floor – is the upper part of a wall, most often in a church, pierced with windows. It is a striking image to grasp the luminous new music of Jules Reidy. Light casts shadows, of course, and the logics of shadow, mirror, and distorted reflection – essential to Reidy's work as a whole – permeate the sumptuous surfaces of "Clerestory." "Shadow Symmetric" is a string quartet commissioned and performed by the JACK Quartet as part of their JACK Studio program. Reidy's collaboration with this quartet is timely: JACK is one of the most important contemporary music ensembles, with a particular interest in natural tuning, an essential component of Reidy's music. "Clerestory Windows" offers a distorted mirror image of the string quartet, arranged in a series of episodes, each reinventing the material in its own way. Clerestory is a meditation on the fundamental dynamics of human experience: orientation and disorientation, the blurred boundaries between the material and the spiritual, and the instability of identity.
