Description

Aunes is a rare solo album by Australian cellist, composer, and performer Judith Hamann, featuring six pieces recorded over several years and in various countries. Expanding on the collage techniques and extended sonic palettes heard on her previous releases, Aunes utilizes synthesizers, organ, voice, and field recordings, alongside the dazzling, pure, and enveloping tones of Judith Hamann’s cello. Across these six pieces, formal aspects like tuning, rhythm, melodic shape, and timbre are not abstractions universally applied to musical material but are inextricable from the instruments and sounds employed, or even the places and communities in which the music was made. The sprawling final piece exemplifies the very personal musical language Judith Hamann has developed in recent years, pairing two layered voices with the limitless depth and harmonic richness of just-intoned cello notes, evoking Ockeghem or Linda Catlin Smith in its elegiac arcs. Judith Hamann has performed for and with Joshua Bonnetta, Dennis Cooper, Charles Curtis, Lori Goldston, Sarah Hennies, Éliane Radigue, and La Monte Young.
