This new recording of one of Ravel's most sumptuous works evokes the exhilarating days of Diaghilev's Russian Ballets in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. It was recorded in the studio in May-June 2014, shortly after the performances given at the Opéra de Paris of the Ballet Daphnis et Chloe in the choreography of Benjamin Millepied, its new Director of Dance, in the sets of Daniel Buren and under the direction of Philippe Jordan who writes about the recording: “When I conduct a ballet, it is very different from a symphony, as the dancers bring a physical dimension that influences the musical phrase, and make me do something else. Moreover, my mother was a ballerina, and my father conducted a lot at the beginning of his career. They certainly passed something on to me.” This sumptuous recording of the complete ballet with the Orchestra and Choir of the Opéra National de Paris is complemented by the famous Waltz by the same Ravel, a symphonic poem, choreographic in spirit, and cataclysmic in its expression, heralding, according to George Benjamin, the Second World War.
