In collaboration with Timmion Records, Daptone is proud to present My Echo, Shadow and Me, the debut album from chicano soul artist Jonny Benavidez. Hailing from San Diego (via El Paso, Texas), Jonny's desire to sing was influenced by his grandfather, John Lorenzo Guzman, who, in the early 60s, spent time with bands from El Paso, including Sonny Powell and the Night Dreamers. At the age of 13, Jonny received a turntable and a box of 45s featuring R&B, doo-wop, and soul, which he studied obsessively, using the harmonies and melodies to cultivate his unique voice. After a chance meeting with the legendary Dimas Garza, Jonny's career began to flourish, and he found himself singing alongside stars like Eugene Pitt and Archie Bell, catching the attention of Timmion Records. Supported by the incomparable Cold Diamond & Mink (Bobby Oroza, Pratt & Moody), he recorded two singles and then an album, his first, featuring 11 songs he wrote himself. From the catchy rhythm of the title track to the doo-wop of "Dedicated to You," the Latin touches of "Uncle Sam" to the sweet soul masterpiece "Somebody Cares," My Echo, Shadow and Me is not only an impressive showcase of Jonny's versatility as an artist.
