Durant l’été 1717, après avoir fait jouer sa Water Music lors d’une croisière royale sur la Tamise, Haendel commença à composer pour James Brydges (1674-1744), qui devint le premier duc de Chandos et créa, au sein de sa propriété de Cannons (près d’Edgware), le Cannons Concert, qui comptait une dizaine d’instrumentistes et trois chanteurs. À partir d’août 1717, Haendel écrivit onze anthems et un Te Deum. Pour Cannons, il transposa et révisa son As pants the hart (HWV 251b). O sing unto the Lord a new song (HWV 249b) est l’adaptation d’un anthem écrit trois ans plus tôt et destiné à la Chapelle royale. Composé en 1717, l’anthem Have mercy upon me, O God (HWV 248) est une paraphrase du « Miserere ». Quant au Let God arise (HWV 256a), son « Alleluia » préfigure la célèbre conclusion du Messie de 1741. Arcangelo et Jonathan Cohen font aujourd’hui revivre ces quatre Chandos anthems pour Cannons avec 8 chanteurs et 11 instrumentistes de premier plan.
