Released only in 1964, six years after Johnny Cash left Sun Records for Columbia Records, Original Sun Sound brings together both his earliest and latest recordings for the label. The track "Wide Open Road," recorded in his early days, shows a singer still under the influence of Hank Williams (and is also notable for the rare presence of A.W. "Red" Kernodle's steel guitar, who left the band shortly after). In "Thanks a Lot," a song written by Charlie Rich during one of his last sessions at Sun, Cash is beholden to no one but himself. Also included is "Belshazah," a gospel track written by Cash, an unusual inclusion as his producer, Sam Phillips, typically only recorded the artist's secular repertoire. Finally, the album features fan favorites such as "Big River," "Country Boy," and "Born To Lose."
