Johnny Cash wore black to protest what he called a stagnant status quo, against closed-mindedness and the hypocrisy of various fraternities that did not practice what they preached. Where clergymen in robes solemnly intoned "and to the prisoners, freedom," Cash went into prisons and sang directly to the inmates. And when ministers spoke of love and forgiveness, Cash put it into practice. His reputation as a troublemaker is undeserved. His reputation as a healer and a gatherer of the lost is not yet firmly established. As each of these songs demonstrates in one way or another, Johnny Cash recognized that since God had forgiven him, he might as well forgive himself and start living his life as he saw fit.
