John Tavener, born in 1944, should not be confused with the other John Taverner, who is a composer from the Elizabethan era. An atypical composer, Tavener, although contemporary, does not really draw his sources from the current corpus but rather from the sounds inherited from ancient Greece or Eastern lands—while using a writing style that is perfectly of our time, in which certain touches characteristic of Messiaen may be fortuitous or deliberate, particularly in Schuon Hymnen. These choral works are immediately accessible despite their complex texture. The music of this sensual, illuminated, sometimes hieratic composer is powerful, poignant, and exudes a rather unsettling scent of timelessness: one finds oneself listening without asking the slightest question, as if crystallized phrases spontaneously resonate in our own ears. Finally, Tavener's choral writing technique is astonishing, directly inherited from the great polyphonists of the Renaissance. The ensemble Polyphony is part of the great lineage of superb English choirs.
