LSO Live presents the first release in the complete cycle of Mendelssohn’s symphonies under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The distinguished Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires is the soloist on this first volume and launches this series, for the first time on the LSO label. Inspired by his travels in the British Isles and the influence of the Scottish moors, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Scottish,” and its overture, Hebrides (“Fingal’s Cave”), are among the composer’s most popular and celebrated works. Sir John Eliot Gardiner writes of this pairing: “Although they spoke with different accents, these brilliant Romantics were united in their fervor for abstract music, so that it might be recognized as having the same expressive force as poetry, theatre or the literary novel. The three works on this album illustrate the effort and scope of invention of these two visionaries, friends and colleagues in Leipzig.” This recording will be available in both formats, SACD and Blu Ray Audio, allowing the London Symphony Orchestra, Sir John Eliot and Maria Joao Pires to be seen and heard at the same time, so that music lovers can fully enjoy this highly successful performance.
