LA MARCHE DU CHIEN NOIR (Hommage à Satie (vinyl)

Description

THE MUSIC: Rather than arranging the composer's pieces one after another again, Johane Myran had the idea of setting to music the daily walk Satie took between Montmartre and Arcueil, where he resided, and during which he composed. The orchestra represents Paris, the piano represents Satie, and the music explores the relationship between the neighborhoods he traversed and the musical ideas that crossed his mind during his journey. Three original compositions, Montmartre, Châtelet, and Arcueil, punctuate the circuit where Gymnopédies, Ogives, Vexations, Sports et Divertissements intertwine. ERIK SATIE: Erik Satie (1866-1925) was a French composer and pianist, born in Honfleur. Satie became interested in music at an early age and entered the Paris Conservatoire at 13 but, considered a "bad student," he escaped by joining the army, from which he was discharged due to illness. In 1887, the musician settled in Montmartre and began composing works with unusual and comical titles, among the most famous: Ogives (1887), Gymnopédies (1888) orchestrated by Claude Debussy, and Six Gnossiennes (1890). He associated with and worked alongside symbolist movements with Mallarmé, impressionist movements with Toulouse-Lautrec and Monet, and Dadaist movements alongside Tzara, Breton, and Aragon, for whom he became an unwitting mentor. - - Today, Erik Satie is considered a precursor in several movements, including neoclassicism and surrealism. THE ORCHESTRA: The Red Star Orchestra is an 18-musician jazz big band, whose conductor Johane MYRAN writes the repertoire, consisting solely of arrangements and original compositions. Created in 2009, originally to revive great jazz orchestra scores, the Red Star Orchestra quickly became a creative orchestra, with a first project in collaboration with guitarist Ninine Garcia, which unfortunately was never recorded. In 2011, Johane Myran, then a backing musician for Olivia Ruiz, proposed to her the idea of creating a repertoire of 50s standards, with original arrangements, leading to the "Olivia sings for the Red Star" project, with an album released by Polydor Universal in 2012, followed by a small tour of European festivals; Johane Myran then became the official conductor of the group. Remembering his Conservatoire years, he then invited Thomas de Pourquery to try his hand at the big orchestra exercise, and the saxophonist took on the challenge as a singer, with the "Broadways" project, whose album was released by Label Bleu in 2016, a collection of musical tales based again on the best-known jazz standards, which was presented on the stages of the most prestigious French festivals. Building on these experiences, the Red Star Orchestra is today one of the rare big orchestras to offer resolutely modern music, drawing simultaneously from jazz, free jazz, contemporary, and electronic music.
