Jim Putnam wrote, composed, and recorded this album alone in the studio he created in his garden, Phase 4 Intergalactic Recording Facility. Besides his calm, harmonious, and instantly recognizable voice, Jim plays all the instruments here: tranquil guitars, floating groove drums and bass, airy analog keyboards, as well as brass and woodwinds, which he highlights and which play a very important role in this record. The arrangements are indeed one of the most appealing aspects of the album. Each foray of trumpet and bass clarinet takes his floating rock into new territories, as if the Pink Floyd of the seventies were crossing paths with Grandaddy. There is also in Jim Putnam's music a rhythm that, while taking its time, never drags. It bounces gently, nodding softly. A sort of hazy session where Curtis Mayfield and Pavement would meet; and where they would cover Dry the Rain by the Beta Band together. Politically, we have recently had to confront once again an America that repulses us. It exists, certainly, but artistic reunions, through Jim Putnam, with that America, this alternative version full of nuance and intelligence, are incredibly refreshing.
