Some debut albums hit the mark. Beyond the allure of novelty, they awaken a singular color, a personal universe, harmoniously suggested by a production in which each song contributes to a kind of artistic manifesto. In them, one recognizes a rare grace, that of first times. This story could begin with “Once upon a time...”. Summer 2012. Jenny Lysander, barely 19, posts a cover of Piers Faccini on YouTube. Her minimalist and highly melodic version of Time of Nought charms the songwriter, curious to discover the compositions the young woman from nowhere has announced to him. Confirmation will come quickly, after a few Garageband demos and a meeting in London. In addition to an authentic folk voice, Faccini discovers superb songs whose quality would almost make Jenny Lysander’s young age a lie. “I immediately thought of the first recordings of great elder stateswomen of female songwriting from the ’60s and ’70s like Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, or, on the current scene, Laura Marling, whose style and early career are also exceptional. The evidence was right in front of me: Jenny was born to write songs, very beautiful songs, in today’s folk vein.” After producing Dom la Nena’s first album with the success we know, Piers Faccini created the Beating Drum label in 2012 precisely to showcase and nurture this kind of purity. The desire to work together is shared and will take shape step by step. Jenny Lysander will inaugurate the label’s signings in 2013 with the EP Lighthouse and today releases her first album Northern Folk. Her career is only just beginning, but Jenny Lysander’s artistic commitment and personality are beyond doubt: her cornerstone is here, in Northern Folk.
