Florence Price: Piano Concerto in One Movement; Symphony No. 1 in E Minor

Description

In this year marking the 70th anniversary of the passing of Florence Price, the British orchestra Chineke! Orchestra celebrates the composer's legacy with two of her flagship works that contributed to her major breakthroughs.
'Symphony No. 1 in E minor' highlights the diversity of African American music and is a nod to Antonín Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. Its creation in 1933 allowed Price to be recognized as the first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major national orchestra. The album also includes her Piano Concerto in one movement, created in 1934. Nearly a century later, pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason continues the legacy of women musicians by bringing Price's music to today's audience through her recording of the work.
The album concludes with His Resignation and Faith, an excerpt from Ethiopia's Shadow in America – a rarely recorded orchestral work, lost until 2009.
