Born in Guadeloupe, the son of a noble planter and a Black slave, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George (1745–1799), was one of the most flamboyant figures in 18th-century Paris: one of the finest violinists and most popular composers in France, but also a charmer, an excellent fencer, and swimmer. His biography almost reads like that of a Bridgerton character.
