Bach : Cantates BWV96, BWV67, BWV121

Description

Cantata BWV 96, composed for the eighteenth Sunday after Trinity and based on the hymn by Elisabeth Cruciger "Herr Christ, der einge Gottessohn" (Lord Christ, only Son of God), opens with a chorus reminiscent of a Christmas carol, featuring a cheerful character that is enhanced by the presence of the piccolo flute. Cantata BWV 67 "Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ" (Keep in Memory Jesus Christ) was composed to be performed on the first Sunday after Easter and belongs to the cycle of cantatas by Bach composed in Leipzig. In the middle of this cantata is the hymn by Nikolaus Herman (1560) praising the day of resurrection. To conclude this cycle of cantatas, Cantata BWV 121 "Christum wir sollen loben schon" (We Must Praise Christ) stands out with a deep, imposing sound. The theme of this work is the wonder of the only Son of God at a virgin. Rudolf Lutz has been conducting the J.S. Bach choir since 1986.
