In November 2014, Radio France inaugurated its new auditorium by giving carte blanche to one of the greatest composers of our time, Peter Eötvös, who was celebrating his 70th birthday. On that occasion, three of his concertos were recorded in world premiere under his direction with three leading soloists. The violin concerto DoReMi, recorded here by its dedicatee Midori, is followed by a Concerto grosso, a dialogue in three parts between the solo cello, the cello section and the entire orchestra. The spectacular Speaking Drums brings this program to a triumphant close: the orchestra (around forty musicians) extends the performance — both theatrical and musical — of the percussionist, who recites texts by the poets Sándor Weöres (Hungarian) and Jayadeva (Sanskrit) and moves around the stage, thus creating connections with one or another instrument in the orchestra. The astonishing Martin Grubinger lends his voice and percussion to this piece, which ends in a highly virtuosic “polyrhythm.”
