Les oeuvres pour piano et violoncelle de Beethoven s'étalent entre 1796 et 1815. Il a pour ainsi dire créé la sonate pour violoncelle avec piano indépendant dans son op.5, écrit pour Jean-Louis Duport et dédié à Frédéric Guillaume II de Prusse ; à l'instar des délicieuses variations sur des thèmes de Haendel et de Mozart, elles représentent la première manière du compositeur, comme l'op.69 est typique de la deuxième.
