La Famille Forqueray

Description

Winner of the famous MA Festival competition in Bruges (which has honored greats such as Scott Ross, Christophe Rousset, Pierre Hantaï, Benjamin Alard, and more recently Jean Rondeau), harpsichordist Justin Taylor, laureate of 2015, records for Alpha Classics a program centered around the Forqueray family: Antoine, Michel, Jean-Baptiste, Nicolas-Gilles. Here are some names from a great family of French composers, violists, and organists. Antoine Forqueray, born in 1672, secures the highly coveted position of Musician of the King's Chamber. He will have a rather complicated relationship with his son Jean-Baptiste, who is born in 1699. Indeed, jealous of his talent for the viola, Antoine locks him away when he is only 16 years old! The recital, which paints a musical portrait of this unique family, is also a place for reflection on transcription. The suites performed on the harpsichord are originally written for viola da gamba. To move from one instrument to another - from one sound world to another, the path taken by Justin Taylor sheds new light on the score and allows one to fully grasp its originality.
