JD McPherson has created something unique and amazing with his latest album, Nite Owls. This is his first album since the critically acclaimed Christmas classic in 2018, SOCKS. Over the past 5+ years, McPherson has kept himself busy writing new songs while touring with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. Being a touring musician offers the chance to see the sights, visit the city, and draw inspiration from the local record store. With Nite Owls, JD wanted to try something new and different. He aimed to draw inspiration from several decades and styles and incorporate them into his own sound. "The initial idea for the album was: it's as if The Ventures from the late '60s were the session band on New Order's first album," McPherson says. Idea realized. Nite Owls delivers the signature sounds of vintage garage rock while bridging the sounds of Bowie and Alan Vega. Songs like "Sunshine Getaway," "The Rock and Roll Girls," and "I Can't Go Anywhere with You" feel like Chuck Berry jamming with Buddy Holly. Meanwhile, tracks like "Nite Owls" and "Don't Travel Through the Night Alone" nod to the UK Factory sound. The retro sound of the unique instrumental track "The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle" would make Dick Dale and Link Wray proud. With Nite Owls, McPherson draws from various genres of the past and combines them to evolve a sound that is distinctly his own.
