Description

In the last decade of his life, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1796) was a church musician in his hometown of Nuremberg. He was incredibly prolific, even by the standards of the time. The Magnificat, the song of praise of the Virgin Mary to the greatness of the Lord, who chose her to be the mother of the Savior, he set this text from the Gospel of Luke to music nearly a dozen times for Protestant vespers. He did so with impressive creativity and imagination, and a sense of instrumental colors that still has an immediate effect today. As in the first volume of this series, we meet a man whose life is full and robust and who does not see the world in any way as a valley of tears. The Himlische Cantorey, under the direction of its founder, conductor, and tenor Jan Kobow, lives up to its celestial name.
