This album is as much a tribute to the magnificence and complexity of an instrument as to the works that have made and marked its history. Fascinated by the organ and by its beauty for as long as he can remember, Jae-Hyuck Cho here takes possession of the Grand organ of La Madeleine, a mythical colossus that still exerts its magnetism today on composers and performers alike. This powerful vehicle for imagination is necessarily answered by the monumental Bach, before whom the program chosen by Cho bows: from the Toccata BWV 565 to the Fantasies and Fugues on themes by the great master of Liszt, Jae-Hyuck Cho clearly establishes the lineage in which he wishes to place his playing and thus offers an album conceived as a kaleidoscope, where each musical fragment echoes its origin. Far from considering only the major works of the repertoire, the organist does not confine himself to the cliché of tradition and presents here Pahdo, “wave” in Korean, a work by composer Texu Kim, commissioned and premiered by him. He thus shows how musical history continues, drawing each time from its roots.
