Hommage mécanique Les prémices de l’enregistrement musical
Description
The Mechanical Music or the beginnings of musical recording. Before the phonographic era, when it was only possible to listen to music by being a pianist (the classic preserve of young ladies from good families of the time) or by going to a concert, whether at the theater or the municipal bandstand, Man was already seeking to record Music in order to broadcast it. Not knowing how to preserve the sounds produced during the performance itself, the first efforts focused on automating the instruments themselves. Traces of Mechanical Music can be found in the bell tower of churches with an automatic carillon, around 1490: a cylinder fitted with pins then activates the mechanism of the instrument concerned. Carillons and organs were the first instruments to be equipped with it; café and street pianos would continue to use this system for a long time.
