Two years after his multi-platinum debut with the album Brushfire Fairytales produced by J.-P Plunier (Ben Harper's alter ego), Jack Johnson offers a second batch of good vibes to fans of peace and serenity. Like former skater Tommy Guerrero, this Hawaiian native and former professional surfer enjoys ballads that are half funk, half blues (sometimes flavored with reggae like "The Horizon Has Been Defeated"), polished with acoustic guitar and wrapped in subtle bass and percussion. His laid-back songs, entrusted to the capable hands of Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), see Jack Johnson reflecting on war ("Traffic in the Sky"), the capitalist world ("The Horizon Has Been Defeated"), and youth ("Cookie Jar"). Then, he returns to his hammock facing the blue sea. Humanist but not preachy.
