Light Verse is the seventh album by Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, an icon of indie-folk, and the fifth for Sub Pop Records. It was recorded with engineer and mixer Dave Way in Laurel Canyon with a host of talented musicians: Tyler Chester, Sebastian Steinberg, David Garza, Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, Kyle Crane, and Paul Cartwright. Fiona Apple also joins Iron & Wine on vocals for the duet "All In Good Time." Sam once again focuses on a series of fictional and personal narratives, filled with desperate characters and wide-eyed optimists, offering promises and a dose of heartache, tears and laughter, life and love. While it may be true that this is perhaps Iron & Wine's most upbeat record, Sam explains that the title mainly reflects how the songs were born in joy after the gravity and anxiety of the pandemic. While recent albums like Beast Epic or Weed Garden hinted at concerns about the fragility of adulthood, these songs exchange that for the perspective it can bring. At every moment, they delight in being finicky or ridiculous (or both) and strive to prioritize beauty over whimsy.
